The link between Vitamin D and Fertility

Now that summer is officially over, it’s the perfect time to chat about a key nutrient that is needed for fertility and sustaining a healthy pregnancy - vitamin D.

While we often think of Vitamin D as the “sunshine vitamin,” it plays a much deeper role - especially when it comes to reproductive health.

Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to hormone imbalances, reduced egg and sperm quality, and failed implantation, which all contribute to difficulties conceiving and an increased risk of miscarriage.

Healthy vitamin D levels also support your immune system and reduces any inflammation in the body.

And it’s needed to build strong bones and reduce your risk of osteoporosis (which is important before, during, and after pregnancy!)

The tricky part? As the days get shorter and we spend more time indoors, our natural stores of Vitamin D can take a dip - right when our bodies may need it most.

Here are a few gentle ways to support your Vitamin D levels this season:

  • Get outside when you can – even 10–15 minutes of sunshine on your skin can help (your arms, thighs and abdomen are the best areas for absorption!)

  • Include Vitamin D-rich foods like eggs, oily fish, and mushrooms (another tip - sunbake your mushrooms upside down for 20 mins to boost vitamin D content).

  • Chat with your practitioner (that’s me!) about whether a supplement might be right for you.

Checking your vitamin D levels is such a simple step, but it can make a big difference in your fertility and pregnancy journey.
